DOP Wine


Baroni Capoano is located in the hills above Cirò Marina, a small town in the province of Crotone, in the heart of the Cirò DOP production. 

The whole production chain, from the ground to the introduction on national and international markets, is controlled and followed by highly specialized professionals, in particular from 2018 the winemaker is the dr. Fabio Mecca, a young winemaker of international renown. The estate extends between ancient olive groves and native vineyards for about twenty-four hectares. From these lands are born wines d.o.c. and oils they have been giving for over two thousand years authoritativeness and prestige to the real Cirò. The cellar occupies 1000 square meters, storage and refining of the most wines valuable works take place in the basement of the family palace between 250cm thick stone walls which, to this end, guarantee a constant and optimal temperature. 

Peculiar characteristic of our vineyards is the seniority of the logs, low to "little trees" which, together with the land hills, guarantee a low yield per hectare of grape production (about 2 kg per vine) but certainly very high quality of the most products indispensable for the production of wines of high prestige. All these factors form the canvas of a mosaic that depicts a unique product for quality and tradition to be requested by the best wine shops and the finest restaurants. 

Our logo is the expression and enhancement of the family blazon, whose origins derive from the ancient coat of arms of the ancient noble family Capoano, dating back to the twelfth century. The Capoano family can boast, for over thirteen centuries, illustrious figures in the scientific, historical, artistic and ecclesiastical fields. There Wine passion is just as old as in the family archives there is an ancient letter of 1198 in which the cardinal of Amalfi Pietro Capoano writes to his brother Raffaele: "Brother, I ask you about that nectar because of his holiness he asks me for provision ". 

The territory of the Ciro 'represents, for its surface and history, the most important vitivinic reality of the region Calabria. The vine has been cultivated in the territory since the times of the ancient Greek colonies. Indeed, where today there are the vineyards, once the ancient Krimisa once stood. The return to viticulture in the cirotan territory only reappeared after 550 a. C., when Justinian reconquered these lands from the Visigothic domain. In his retinue, the fathers Brazilians and people of Armenian origin gave a new impetus to the production of wine and in this the ancient Ypscron, the current Ciro ', was founded. In the following centuries the vines were selected better suited to this terroir including the Gaglioppo and the Greco Bianco, main grape varieties of the Cirò DOC. Today the territory of Ciro to can celebrate the 50 from the recognition of the DOC, representing nationwide one of the oldest DOC. The Cirotan territory is typical of the Calabrian Ionian coast: narrow tongues of flat land that end on the beaches of the coast. Close to these plains, the hilly lands are crossed by rivers. It is precisely on these hills that the vineyards are cultivated, still raised today in little trees.
